Was there anything wrong with the old colors and logos? Does MLB have enough "red" already?

Merchandising and graphics. The purple color was hurting their merchandise sales, and had really been added only because it was popular for the Suns and because Colangelo liked the color. The purple also didn't work well in graphics, and would often come out looking blue or black.

The most likely answer is that they want to sell more merchandise to fans who "have" to have the current logo. The uniform change bothers me because it breaks with baseball's tradition of having the team's city name on their away jerseys.
