Well, judging from the story you provided, I would think that he will be punished plenty already for what he did. He is already in a heap of trouble from all the charges against him. He is a 20-year veteran of Northwest Airlines and is likely to be suspended without pay at the least or fired. He will likely be ordered to pay a heavy fine, be mandated to drug rehab, do some jail time once he is found guilty (if his judge is not a lenient judge), and this is likely to take a heavy toll on his family and the relationship he has with family members, especially his wife, if he has one. Let's not forget that his driver's license will likely be suspended, and I'm not sure if this will affect his pilot's license or not. Add to that, the fact that he is probably feeling like a complete and utter idiot for doing something so recklessly stupid and dangerous and life-altering, and I'd say that without adding any punishment to all of this, he will already be punished quite a bit.

At the very least, I believe he should pay a heavy fine for the danger he inflicted upon others and the manpower costs of trying to catch him, and he should be mandated to undergo an inpatient drug rehab program. Beyond that, I guess it will be up to the judge.
