"The Beatles" were THE band of the 60s. They established the fashion and the direction of rock music at the time. Of course, the same can be said for "Nirvana" in the 90s. I mean, for every mop-top in the 60s, there was a flannel jacket or torn jeans in the 90s. Moreover, both bands paved the way for some great bands and... some diluted- not so great- bands.

Both bands undoubtedly changed music and culture to a great extent. However, I think the Beatles had a more lasting effect on music. They mainstreamed rock and roll and paved the way for every rock band since them. Nirvana simply changed the DIRECTION of rock music. If you ask me who is the better band, I would say the Beatles. If you ask me who I like to listen to more, I would definately say Nirvana.

I would have to say Slayer. While Metallica showed that a group of teenagers from the bay area could become big and successful, their influence on other bands can be seen as limited. Any metal band now, or any band worth their salt rarely ever sites any album after the black album as a major influence; and if they do they are probably not worth listening to at least from a metalheads point of view. Slayer on the other hand, while seen as over rated by some, had a bigger impact on the metal scene. Their albums of show no mercy through reign in blood were a major kickstart to the emergence of death metal and if you know your history you know the evolution of the metal genre after that. With those four albums they practically created a new genre of metal; Metallica's first five albums may have inspired other thrash acts but not a new genre to be pioneered. BQ: Slayer - The Antichrist Anthrax - Caught In A Mosh Megadeth - Tornado Of Souls Metallica - Whiplash

I say the Beatles... I think Nirvana called attention to a scene that was already there and would've exploded anyway, whereas I see the Beatles as a band that changed the course of music entirely.

The Beatles are the best-selling musical act of all time in the United States (that means more than Nirvana).

Although Nirvana are my favourite band, I agree that of the two bands the Beatles had the larger impact. They are undoubtedly one of the biggest bands in history. I mean, not many bands get 27 number one hits.

The Beatles had a greater impact on music itself, but Nirvana had a impact on grunge, rock and alternative bands for years to come

Neither band was nearly as big a deal as people make them out to be. As far as music goes, the Beatles really weren't anything incredibly innovative, and Nirvana's influence died with grunge. Sales don't mean anything here. I mean, Mandy Moore albums sell, but we all know that she's just another pop singer.

The Beatles. I never saw teen girls fainting over Kurt Kobain. The Beatles had a more diverse music catalog too.
