I consider those things to be the same.

Either one is highly unlikely, from a statistical point of view.
But I'm pretty sure the 3,000 dead on 9/11 exceeds the total number dead in US due to school massacres, which is well under 100 for all US school massacres.
A school massacre could certainly be called a terrorist act, but so far in the US, the motivations have not been political. This could change, of course, since politically-motivated school massacres, often by Islamist extremists, have occurred in other countries. There was one in Afghanistan on April 11, killing 6 children.

In the United States, you are much more likely to be shot at school. I'm sorry if this sounds crude, but statistically speaking, 9/11 was a fluke. School shootings and shootings in general (not necessarily large-scale ones) are regular occurrences.

Right now, I would expect a shooting at my college first. It's in a tiny town. An international terrorist wouldn't even know it existed. We have nothing here, except corn. Unless he/she was really hungry...

Both of them are very rare occurances, yet they both get media attention.
