I had 10929 hits for my site which in brackets mentioned (44.24 hits/visit) for this month so far.What does this mean?

hits = visits so when u goto that site its a hit.

Basicly it means that some browser somewhere on the net came accross your website. It could be an actual person viewing your website in which case each time he/she hit the enter button, or the refresh button, or a link on your website or goes to another page on your website is considered a hit. A hit also happens when your website/webpage shows up on a yahoo or some other seach results page. You could also get some hits by/thru webrobots or web crawlers. Hits is a pretty generic term just like page views so its quite possible that you could have a high number and not mean must. You will also increase the hit count anytime you make changes to your website because you are interacting with it. so if you make many large em-mass changes to your website you hit count will also go up.

Basically a hit is a visit. When someone goes to your page and view it, that is a hit. So every time a person follows a link to your site, or goes directly to your URL, you get a hit.

Its the number of people who have visited a website. On the other hand it also doesn't mean the people who visited stayed very long or actually read anything.

Depends who you ask!
But in reality a hit is every file that is downloaded..
like if your site has 50 images.. and an html file.. every vistit counts as 51 hits..
But what most people refer to as "hits" is really visits..
basicly how often people go to your site.. every visit is a "hit"

"hits" do not mean unique visitors. If you have pictures, text images, etc. on any given web page, then each one of those counts as a "hit" everytime the page is viewed. In other words, if you have 10 files (images, etc) on your home page.....and I 'visit' your home page....that counts as 10 "hits".....10 people visit your home page = 100 "hits"
"44.24 hits/visit" means that each user/visitor to your domain averaged 44.24 hits per visit. Depending on how many files you have on each page would dictate how many pages each user accessed on your domain.
Pretty useless statistic actually.

One dollar sign mean it is cheap. 3 dollar signs it means it is pretty expensive.
