what do you mean, what rights do you have legally? it's perfectly legal for him to spread whatever rumous he wants...it's called freedom of speech. you're thinking of SLANDER, which is a harmful statement in a transitory form (transitory means "not lasting"), the most common of these being speech. however, this is not a legal offense unless it is PUBLlSHED. so unless he says it on tv, or something along those lines, there's nothing you can do.

BUT you have the right to get angry at him, and you have the right to tell people that the rumours aren't true. helpful? nah, probably not.

Actually, slander is deemed "published" when it is relayed to a third party. What really matters is what is being said. Normally, you need to prove damages if it is slander; however, there are certain things that are instantly deemed "libel" if said. These are typically: things about you as a professional; things about a transmitted disease; and some others which, frankly, slip my mind. You don't need to prove damages if these are at issue.

You do need to know that there is an absolute defense to most slander if the statements are true, or if the person can convince a jury that they are true.

You need to talk to a lawyer in your area for best information. You need to know that it will be expense to litigate.

Gather up as much proof as you can. Get an attorney. Sue him for defamation of character and libel.
