Well...what makes a civilization a successful in terms of it being able to evolve, and advance etc? And what makes another go down the tube? Give me your ideas, and details would be nice, not just a lame one sentence answer. = ] Thanks.

One of the biggest keys to a civilization being successful is how it deals with it's stupid people. If you read 'The Basic Laws of Human Stupidity' it explains more in detail how it does this. (Which I am having a really hard time finding online)

Basically if your civilization allows stupid people to get into control then the civ will become unstable and most likely get itself destroyed or destroy itself.

Bread & circuses is always the answer. As long as people are well fed (bread) and kept entertained (circuses) then the civilization will be stable...

Growth, development & evolution are different things though... you would need to have a way to motivate people to change without making them uncomfortable enough to change the government...
