Hi, trickdwi is right: it originated in France after the Revolution .
The trouble now is that when Gorby wrecked the inexorable advance of Communism(which would have triumphed in Europe and most of the rest of the World.)
All the Commies and Hard-line left wingers went into the closet and ditched their Commie talk.
They then preached PC and "liberalism"
PC is an even more restrictive creed than Communist double-talk:tell a black pupil that 2+2 does not equal 5 and you are howled down as a racist !
Do you think that Joe Stalin would ever have dared to pass a law which said that you could be sacked for being "Too British or Too White"
NO !
But the Tartan Mafia have done it!
Mind you ! It will only be CERTAIN WHITES who'll be sacked :those who aren't pansy or indigenous English People, and those who do a bit of work for a living.
I predicted on these pages two weeks ago that Blair would create an amnesty for all the Work-shy loafers on benefits.
HE DID IT TODAY: 800,000 of them for starters!

The 'left wing' of any movement would be the more liberal, the right the more conservative. Liberal, in the broadest sense implies seeking political and social change (presumably for the better). Conservative, OTOH, implies seeking to preserve society and seek political stability (again, presumably for the good of the society). However, what that means isn't always the same. For instance, the right-wing of the Soviet Communist party near the end was radically communist, they were conserative or right wing, because they were trying to preserve communism, and avoid changing to a different system. If you were looking for radical communists in the US, you'd have to look on the left wing - because the US still isn't communist, and a lot more change would be required to get it there.

Left wing tend to take into account the needs of the poorer/working classes. Political groupings such as socialists are left wing, with communism being the extreme left.
Right wing are vain and pathetic. They want their country to look good, regardless of the circumstances of the people within the country. The want the rich to get richer, and the poor to get poorer. Conservatives and capitalists are right wing. Fascism (like Bush) is the extreme right. At this point on the political spectrum (the far right) the politicians are mad, deranged and quite often racist.

Typically speaking, if you live in the US right wing is geared towards conservatives, check out the site below to a paper called Right Wing News. This will give you a better understanding
Left wing are very liberal. In the US, liberals support abortion, gay marriage and so on.
Bush is right wing, Clinton is left wing.
Outside of the US, Right wing is socialism and Left Wing is Communisim.
Be sure to check out the sites below, they give lots of info on both!

The place to be is in the middle. Most Americans are very close to dead center. The American political spectrum goes from Liberal on the left to Conservative on the right. Extremists in the truest sense do not exist in large numbers in America. A person who is far enough to the left advocates anarchy, lack of any government and one who is far enough to the right advocates totalitarian government. True Communism is as far to the left as anyone could imagine but there is no real Communism in the sense of Marx and Ingels as they assume everyone is the same and wants the same things. Humans are different and too diverse for pure Communism to work. Instead what we have seen is more collectiveism where a totalitarian government (rule more by committee rather than one person) makes decisions for all. Few ordinary people have any say. Of course, totalitarianism is rule by only one person who makes all the decisions and no one dares argue or expect ideas to filter up to the dictator.
Leaders in recent Communist governments tend to be dictators despite the parliament that is supposed to be making the laws.
Although we may refer to each other as radicals one side or the other, in truth and if one looks at the total world political spectrum what we call a radical is one hovering near the center but just a little more to one side or the other than the majority of people.
Liberalism generaly means change and conservativism generally means we stop and take a breath or a step backward for awhile. Neither is necessarily bad or good. Sometimes the changes advocated by liberals come so fast and are so complex that we need to stop and digest what has happened. This is why we elect conservatives. They offer a balance to keep us from going to far too fast and thus trying to do things we are not prepared for. Liberals control the conservative viewpoint too by making things move. If we always had conservatives and nothing else we would not advance or change anything. The founding fathers were all liberals of their time but those like Hamilton who was more conservative among the liberals kept men like John Adams from going too far. Men like Jefferson and Madison kept men like Hamilton from bringing us back to monarchy whether intended or not.
In 1964 when I first became interested in politics I visited the campaign headquarters for both Pres. Johnson and Sen. Goldwater. It was a man at Goldwater HQ that explained to me that we have a pendulum type of movement in political thought in America. The pendulum will move one way and then turn and move the other. At that time the pendulum was moving left and he knew his candidate would likely lose but they had to try. In the 1980's the pendulum pegged right headed left for awhile in the 90's and now is pegging right but beginning to move left again. I beleive we will see a large leftward swing next year both in the Congress and the oval office.

The political spectrum has the liberals were on the left and the conservatives were on the right. This line was drawn up based on the French's government structure where the commoners with more liberal views were placed on the left and the "nobility" sat on the right. A person's political view would be charted along this line. Modern models of the political spectrum are variations of a square.

I believe it actually derives from French politics.
But really, today I think that the right wing means that you support Bush, and the left wing means that you are against Bush, that's at least how Bush would see it.
In my view, there are a lot of reasons that Bush betrays right wing principles.
