I know what u are talking of it is a special salt to reduce the effects of calcium in the tap water on the metal parts of the machine.Granular Salt
Yes you can but don't make it a habit or else u will forget to do so and by not adding the salt u can ruin ur dishwasher
but there are detergents with the added salt it them.

I've had a dishwasher for years and never heard of using salt. I only use the detergent made for dishwashers.

The salt softens the water and makes it easier for your detergent to work, and alas, clean and sparkly dishes. I'd not make it a habit of running the dishwasher with out it, however if you are out and need to run a load through, once or twice might not hurt.

Someone has just said they never use salt , it would´t have a salt compartment if you did´t have to use it. The salt help reinforce the detergent. and if you don´t use the salt your glasses and dishes will come out with a bad film of white all over them, So I think you should use the salt along with the liquid for putting the shine on the plates& glasses

I've never had to use salt in a dishwasher. Why do you use salt? Who told you to do this? Are you sure this is safe for the machine? Read the manual
