Every drag you take off a cigarette stops the baby from getting oxygen for 90-120 seconds. You're killing the baby.

Smoking in pregnancy can affect your baby, not just before birth, but also in the future. Here are some of the effects of smoking while pregnant. Smoking raises the levels of carbon monoxide in your bloodstream. This reduces the amount of oxygen available to your baby. When you smoke, harmful chemicals reach your baby.Nicotine constricts the blood vessels on your side of the placenta, which means oxygen is passed over less effectively to the baby. The result is the baby grows less well than he might have done, and he'll be born lighter than otherwise. This might make a great difference to his health at birth. There are also effects on brain development and on the general health of your baby, which have been shown to last into childhood, and even beyond. There is also a great deal of evidence that men who smoke when their partners are pregnant also affect the baby's health - whether or not the woman smokes herself.

Because you are harming your baby and making it addicted to cancer sticks. Plus it's not good for your health or the baby. The baby will be born with respiratory problems and possible be born prematurely and may end having Learning Disabilities when it's older. Not to mention your child could be born with a low birth rate or possible be still born because of the second hand smoke it gets if the mother smokes or is around people who smoke.

My niece smoked and drank while pregnant. Her baby has been the sickest child I have ever seen. He is in the hospital on a regular basis with infections. His resistence is so low. If you can't make a sacrifice for your baby now I can tell you you will have a hard time doing it later. There is nothing worse than a new mom holding a baby in one hand and a cigarette in the other.

Because the nicotine and chemicals in cigarette smoke is toxic to both you and the baby. Babies born to mothers who smoke are more likely to have a low-birth weight which can cause all kinds of problems. Children whose parents smoke are also more likely to have asthma and other respiratory problems. Basically you shouldn't do it because it poisons your baby.

Smoking can cause low birth weight and breathing problems for the developing child. Smoking can also contribute to allergies. The main cause of lung cancer is ciggerette smoke. Did you know you can get lung cancer from second hand smoke? People have developed lung cancer as a result of having parents who smoke in their home.

Placenta Abruption
This condition is where the placenta pulls off the wall of the uterus either before or during labor, necessitating an immediate delivery, usually via cesarean. A smoker’s placenta is thinner, making it more susceptible to an abruption.
Placenta Previa
Again because of the smoker’s thin placenta, it is more likely to cover the mouth of the uterus, the cervix. This can cause bleeding during the pregnancy. It also makes vaginal birth dangerous and a cesarean becomes necessary due to the risk of hemorrhage of mom and baby.
Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS)
Babies born to mothers who smoke are more likely to die from sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS).
Preterm Labor
If you smoke your body is more likely to try to end your pregnancy sooner in an effort to protect your baby from the harmful smoke. The problem? Babies born even slightly prematurely have a greater risk of death and other complications. The sooner the baby is born, the more likely you baby is to die or have serious complications, including mental retardation and cerebral palsy.
Stillbirth
Smoking during pregnancy increases the risk of your baby dying during your pregnancy.
Low Birth Weight
Birth weight is an important factor in your baby’s health. The smaller the baby, the more at risk for many problems. In fact, low birth weight is one of the top reasons for babies to be ill and die in the first months of life.
Colic
Recent studies show that if you smoke your baby is more likely to have colic.
Respiratory Infections
If you smoked during pregnancy or if your baby is surrounded by second hand smoke, your baby will be more likely to be ill, have asthma and other respiratory problems.
Premature Rupture of Membranes (PROM)
Your water breaking too early is another risk of smoking in pregnancy. It can also lead to premature birth.
Miscarriage
If you smoke, you could have trouble staying pregnant. It can also decrease your fertility.

There are health risk factors for using tobacco products during pregnancy such as low birth weight, premature birth, and the odds of having a miscarriage are lessoned... but there are many mothers that have smoked during pregnancy without any problems occurring as well, so it's up to the individual to decide.
