How and why?

You don't think by telling kids not to do something, that they aren't going to want to do it even more??? And without the knowledge on how to be safe, wouldn't that lead to EVEN MORE unwanted pregnancies and diseases???

Yes we can READ!! And I have 3 children, I do not think the abstinence sex ed is a good thing. I would rather my kids know that there are options out there to prevent pregnancy and disease. I know that most kids do not feel comfortable talking to their parents about the issue and As much as I hate to admit it, the more conservative the parent the harder it is going to be to open up about this issue.

In my opinion pregnancy is the best thing that could happen if my child were to have sex young.. Meaning there are so many deadly diseases out there to worry more about. Pregnancy we can deal with... I pray that it never happens in their young years. I think schools should teach all the basics of contraceptives available, I don't think they need to exploit sex as a o.k. thing. and should push abstinence on them more than the contraceptives. But reality is most teenagers won't listen to what is preached at them.

I don't know what a Neo-con is. I'm a conservative and I definately don't think abstinence only works. You can see how effective "just say no" has worked in our "war on drugs." I took a fantastic human sexuality class in college and if it could be taught in the same manner...I wouldn't have any objections. It was abstinence first and then atleast an understanding of all the working parts so you know what the heck your doing. I was one of a few adults in the class and was surprised how many women thought the scar from circumcision was a vasectomy scar. People are playing with fire and don't have a clue what's going on. I didn't wait with my kids and I thank taking that class because it made me feel more comfortable talking to them about it. I wasn't about to let them pick up their wealth of worldy info from the locker room.

Unfortunatly there's some people that may push things that cross some moral barriers so I can understand why parents are reluctant to give this aspect over to the public school. Heck they can't manage reading, writing and math. I don't want some nut case "study" to have the government decide what they should know and then every "special interest" group to have their 2 cents in.

So.....no....abstinence only isn't effective but parents do need to be more informative on teaching kids about it at home. My "sex talk" was don't let a boy touch your knee. LOL Still haven't figured out what the knee has to do with it and I've had 2 kids. LOL But I'm proud to say my knee is virgin. LOL

It doesn't work with everyone, but it is very effective. If you teach young people that they are valuable individuals who should respect themselves, and you also show them what can happen to their lives as a result of engaging in sexual activity, then what happens is these young people learn the adult lesson of responsibility. Yes, you are always going to get the petulant children who insist on doing whatever they want and to Hell with the rules and to Hell with what anyone else thinks, but I can chisel it in stone for you that those who refuse to behave like grown-ups are going to learn the hard way. They'll either end up getting an abortion and answering for it when they meet their Maker, or they end up having the children and living lives of abject poverty. There is one thing that is 100% accurate and 100% good about abstinence-only sex ed: Abstinence is the only 100% guaranteed method to keep from getting pregnant and to stay STD free.

It depends on how you define work. Being a product of an abstinence only sex ed program I think it does not deter students from having sex. However, I do not think high schools should encourage students to be promiscuous by handing out condoms. I think there is a middle-ground that would provide the most effective sex ed to our next generation.

I only know of one time that abstinence didn't work and that time Jesus was the result.

Abstinence was taught for years and the society worked great. Unwed pregnacy was looked upon as bad and when it did occur it was treated as a black eye on society. Nowadays unwed pregnacy is looked upon as a badge of honor. "Look I spread my legs and let some loser have his way with me. AIN'T I GREAT!". When this prospective gets reversed and we stop treating these girls with comtempt and they start seeing the consequenses of their actions the world at large might become a better place. By that I mean that all the freedoms we have in the world say we are allowed to do it, it doesn't mean we have to!

Actually studies have shown that the abstinence only method actually may increase dangerous behavior.
Many teens that take an abstinence pledge often don't consider behaviors like oral sex well, sex. So not educated about safe sex measures, they engage on dangerous sex that still can spread disease.
True many conservatives will close their eyes to the problem hoping it will go away, but they're just fooling themselves.

You'd better believe there are...

Not only do they believe that kind of nonsense, but they continually cover their eyes and ears concerning the fact that the US teen pregnancy rate is the highest on the planet; 9X higher than the Netherlands where they take sex ed. seriously and allow teens access to contraception.

The US could learn big time from the Netherlands.

The studies are in and there is basically NO DIFFERENCE in the unwanted pregnancy rate and the STD infection rate of those coached in the "abstinence-only" approach and the liberal "education in reality" approach. The only significant impact that has been observed is that fewer of those taught "abstinence" go to a doctor soon enough for an infection to be addressed.

It is proving at this time that all this abstinence is not even being thought by people, the ones that calls for abstinence are hypocrites, other words, "Do as I say not as I do". That counts George Bush and the whole caboodle.

We use words like honor, code, loyalty. We use these words as the backbone of a life spent defending something. You use them as a punchline. I have neither the time nor the inclination to explain myself to a woman who rises and sleeps under the blanket of the very freedom that I provide, and then questions the manner in which I provide it. I would rather you just said thank you, and went on your way.
