I placed this earlier on the 'government' catagory, and didn't get much response, so I'm re-posting here.

I hate to see the deaths of anyone used for political purposes, but believe that those in the government who are anti-gun will definitely use today's Virginia Tech shooting to call for more gun restrictions, or the quick passage of the re-authorization of the "assault rifle" Bill, known as 1022. The same thing happened back in 2001 with the so-called 'Patriot Act' following 9-11.

There are 240 million + (known) guns in this country, and they are in (largely) safe hands, judging by their silence. Changing a law/adding new ones will not change that! The guns are neutral; it is the hands they are in that determine their use and utility.

I heard one of the gals who were present say they were cowering under their desks after the shooting started-these are the descendants of those who fought W.W. 2 and Bunker Hill, etc.!? There's a reason why they (modern metros, etc.) are often referred to as 'sheeple'!

My reference to the Patriot Act was intentional, and was used because it is a further example of big-brother intrusion in the lives of the citizens who created the government they are now 'subjects' (British meaning) of! I know the difference between bills, and the Brady bill was just another example I could have used, but did not, due to it being in the previous century.

A so-called 'decent person' doesn't want to disarm his family, friends, and neighbors so they'll be helpless when attacked, as the students in this episode obviously were!

Probably, their weapon is the ultra liberal media.

If you're going to rant and rail, you should get your facts straight, please. The Patriot Act has nothing to do with banning weapons. It's more of a fascist/Big Brother thing - legalizing torture in certain circumstances, allowing wiretaps without court orders (and granting a blanket amnesty for all prior cases after the fact), and other things of that nature.

You're thinking of the Brady Bill, which was passed after the failed assassination attempt on Reagan in 1981.

You can rest on your tired "guns don't kill people, people kill people" claim all you want, but the simple fact of the matter is that gun-related crimes are much lower in countries where weapons are harder to come by.

How can you even sit there and make this tragedy a political agenda to further your ideas?

I don't understand how the citizens of the U.S.A. who live in a free country even feel the need to own weapons, what good ever comes out of a weapon other than when the actual gun is destroyed?

You're a moron. How much do you want to bet there will be over 10 republicans on yahoo answers asking that very question? Don't turn this tragic event into some political war. I have family in politics that are republicans...they would be ashamed of you.

Change liberals to any decent human being and let's hope they use political pressure to ban most weapons.

Please don't use tragedy to try to make political points.

I think as soon as the news broke cries for gun control were simultaneous on this site. Pathetic...people using a tragedy like this to push their own agenda.

Of course they will!! Its a national tragedy. Misery breeds political activity in America........

But dont worry..... nothing will happen... you have the Constitution to protect the right to bear arms.

Give it another few years and madmen will still have their chance to blow the heads of hundreds of people.

Nothing to worry about...

Well, seeing how the weapon was a GUN, I'd say yes, guns should be banned on campus.
