Working on your own will teach you to be in good balance. People often compensate their own inability to balance by holding on to their partners.

Basic step should work all the same - you are supposed to be on your feet and in good balance. American Spin will be a bit harder to master on your own because you normally use the floor to actually make it happen, and you use the partner to make it faster. You can learn to use the floor all the same, and you can use the wall instead of a partner. Just push off the wall with your hand. Same for the first step of the basic (aka rock step): use the wall, but don't push, just hold your hands to the wall and don't separate them from it. If your hands are separating from the wall- that means you'd be pulling your real partner off his feet. All the kicks and flicks are done without much connection anyway, so that should work all the same.

When dancing solo you'll have to skip the moves that vitally depend on interaction with your partner. Like, some versions of Chicken Walks will not be possible, the ones where you're leanign backwards and he's pulling you. You'll have to put a different interpretation to that step. Stop And Go is possible, but doesn't make any visual sence without a partner.

Is there any particular step you're working on? It hard to advise on main things how to dance because you didn't specify what is the level of your experience. If you're working on Bronse there is no use to talk about kick and flicks, if you're Champ - you probably know more than I do, I can only give some words of support - use that floor, keep it under you, small steps, you go girl!
