My mom is looking for a house. My mom told me that I will move shellby into a bigger tank. And Shellby will have a friend. But I'm scared that they'l try to kill each other. Should I be worried and what are the risks. What are the benefits?

There's way more risks than benefits when it comes to putting two turtles together that haven't been for their whole lives. The benefits are very numbered. Besides your own enjoyment, there's almost none. Turtles don't socialize by nature and the only time that they come together in the wild are if their food is in the same place and for mating. They're not social creatures so they really don't benefit from having more than one together. The risks are great. They absolutely have to be very near the same size (with no more than 1" of a differance). Your original turtle may become territorial and aggressive. They might not get along. If this happens then yes they will fight and when they fight they are vicious. Yes there's a good possibility that you'd have to separete them or your newer turtle would be killed by the older one. They don't need buddies. I'm able to keep my 2 together because they're brother and sister but I wouldn't recomend putting two turtles together that don't already know each other. The risks are too great and they have basically no benefit from being together. Think of it as sharing a room with your exchange student who you've never met before and can hadly understand. There's gonna be conflicts as is the way with turtles. Your other turtle is already going to be mad about the move (they like being in their homes and content, I've moved with mine before). Hope this helps!

Turtles are solitary creatures, but I have two together. Mr. and Mrs. Turtle I call them. Mrs. Turtle was a baby when I got her and Mr. Turtle did a lot of biting and clawing, but that's how turtle court. So when you do get another RES, you'll need at least a 75 gallon tank. Two turtles need a lot of room. Make sure that the new turtle is close to the same size as your existing RES. Remember, for every inch of length, there should be ten gallons of water. GOOD LUCK!

contrary to what other have said i read your other question about the colorings on it ears getting darker. this means that your current turtle is an adult or close. adding another slider or any other species could have very bad side effects. if you were to get one that is a baby the older turtle may hurt it or if you get another adult they may fight as well and one may kill the other. turtles don't really spend much time together in nature. only when there is a single dry rock in a creek for them to sun bathe. i would adivse against this but you can try but watch clase and if it is a problem you will have to seperate them. this means a back up tank. also remember that for every inch of length on a turtles shell they need about ten gallons of water. not to metion hightened filtration. food, heat lamps that may need to be on oppisite sides of the aquarium. hope this helps.

firstly....Awwwww!! :) turtles are awesome!! I don't think you need to worry at all....turtles really thrive when in the company of other turtles related or not. I have a large tank with three RES total strangers to eachother at first and they have always gotten along very well...they eat well and swim well together and it is so much fun to watch them bask in the heat of the light....they will even stack themselves up on eachothers backs !! So...have no fear and enjoy your little buddies....

As long as each turtle has room- about 10 gallons of water per inch of shell length, they should be OK!
