I am not for banning guns, but the laws on the books are not doing the job of keeping these dangerous weapons off the streets.

We must have better regulation and stricter controls. Before we have another tragedy that was 100% preventable.

First,

Tragedies are NEVER %100 preventable.

The fact that a gun was used to kill people today does not reinforce gun-control of any type as a solid means of preventing mass murder.

The gun was a tool used by a person. Had this murderer used plant food to poison everyone, should we also outlaw plant food?

As a Republican I am not advocating "do nothing". I am however, completely against making guns illegal to own.

When you blame the gun (as you are doing in your question above), you take accountability away from the offender.

Gun regulation and strict controls only put guns into the hands of those who will get them illegally anyway.

Remember, there are far more dangerous things on the streets than guns. Just look at how many deaths happen everyday in auto accidents?

How was this tragedy preventable? People have been killing people for years now. I guess the question is what set this person off?

The gun was an instrument for the killing, what we need to know is why the individual who killed everyone did this. Banning guns does nothing but promote an increase in crime. Look at states like NY who have strict gun controls. Crime is out of control in those areas.

For each addition year that a law permitting concealed handguns is in effect, the murder rate declines by 3%, rape by 2%, and robberies by over 2%.

Despite rigid gun laws in the 1980s and 1990s, Great Britain’s overall murder rate recently rose to the highest level since records began 100 years ago. Meanwhile, in America, the number of privately owned guns increased by 5.3 million each year during the violent crime rate decline of the 1990s.

If someone was bent on doing something like that all the laws in the world would not have prevented it. They would have found a way.

I disagree it was 100% preventable. Even with stricter controls this tragedy might well have happened. Short of confiscating and totally banning sale of all firearms in this country we will never be assured of total freedom from this kind of thing. It is one of the prices we all pay for the freedoms we afford ourselves and others. These are rights guaranteed in the Constitution not privileges to be given and taken away.

Right!! And we should keep the "Stuff" your smoking legal huh?

Responsible people have the right and should always have the right to bare arms.
We have good regulations and strict controls, that doesn't stop someone from breaking in and stealing guns, or getting them off the black market.. OR even worse It won't stop Good People from turning Bad!!!

Why do you think that any gun laws could have prevented this tragedy? If someone really wants to go on a rampage they are not going to care if they have to obtain a gun illegally.

I don't think that passing stricter gun laws would bother anyone that is willing to kill 31 people much.

If you make laws to try to stop this they will do nothing. People like the coward that killed those today will just get a gun illegally.
