i have heard that taking the pill long term can actually make you infertile... is this true? or is it just if you take it continuously with no periods inbetween?

There was a fear of infertility as a side effect a LOOOOONG time ago when birth control pills were new. Back then, they had much stronger doses, far more than was necessary to work.

These days, BCPs are lighter and get the job done with minimal amounts of hormones, thus having fewer side effects.

I've been on the pill for about 10 years. I'm not having any problems. I know when I TTC, I'll need to let it wash out of my system for about 6 months, but other than that, I'm in good health.

As for taking the pill for long periods of time with no periods, I would advise against that. There have some a few studies that link endometrial cancer to inhibiting menstruation. Your body wants to shed that tissue, even if you think it's inconvenient.

I am on long term pill myself. I have heard from doctors that it really does not matter to the body. The way I see it, if my body wants a period, it goes and has one (even though I am on my pills). So I really dont think it will make you infertile. But again, I am not a doctor and you should ask your gynecologist to be sure.
