For cozy mysteries you cannot beat Dame Agatha Christie. Her Miss Marple mysteries are about as cozy as you can get. They usually take place in little English villages, where everyone knows everyone. They are also, considering the mystery genre these days, quite tame. They are very civilized books, and open a window to a lovely slice of English life, where everyone, including the killer, stops for tea in the afternoon and eats scones. My favorite of the Miss Marple stories are "The Murder at the Vicarage", "The Body in the Library", "They Do it With Mirrors", and "What Mrs. McGillicudy Saw" (I believe it's got an alternate title here in the US.)

Lillian Jackson Braun has a whole series of "The Cat Who..." mysteries that are also a bit gentler reads. I personally don't care for them, but that doesn't mean that you won't.

Another author I highly recommend is Charles Todd, and his Ian Rutledge novels. They are great mysteries, with a quirky detective, and they all are rather cozy in that they take place in the English countryside after WWI. I cannot recommend this series highly enough. You should be able to find a list of the books just by searching under the authors name.

I hope that is of some use to you.

Happy Reading!

Any of the Nero Wolfe mysteries by Rex Stout are great! They're inexpensive (usually around $7), not excessively long, and move quickly. But they also have plenty of twists and turns.

My picks would be The Golden Spiders, Over My Dead Body, and The Second Confession. But I'd recommend them all!

This site, from the official Nero Wolfe book club - the Wolfe Pack - lists all the novels and short story collections with descriptions of each:

Have you ever read "The Cat Who..." series by, forgive me if I spell her name wrong, Lillian Baum? They are simplistic, but enjoyable mysteries. The characters are very likeable. I suggest reading them in sequence, though not necessary to understand what is going on.

I would recommend the entire series by Patricia Cornwell called her Scarpetta series. I read everyone of these books back to back, hardly putting them down.
