The well is approx 1 meter in diameter and there is no room to operate a spade when climbing down inside. Does anyone know of any special type of tool, or digger that can be used to dig down in a restricted space ?

thanks for the suggestions - a post hole shovel may do the trick, and I will contact our local heritage group. FYI the well is (I'm told ) about 300 years old and about 8 meters deep, we've only just uncovered it ..

Check with local sewer cleaning companies. See if anyone owns a vacuum rig. They can come and vacuum the debris out for you in no time at all. Not sure what they would cost you. Might be more than you are willing to pay but it would get it cleaned out quickly without you having to do the work.

As someone mentioned, a post hole digger, but using a hoe should work. It'll take a little longer, but the blade is 90 degrees to the pole and you can use it to scoop stuff into a bucket.
Using the same idea of a hoe, but with a wider "scoop". If the stuff is loose you can use a metalic dust pan, but that will require you to bend over a bit.
If you have a military surplus store, you can buy a folding military shovel. They're about 24" long fully opened.

I would use a post hole digger and stand outside of well. Use the digger to catch the debris, once you get it cleaned up a little with it, then you could try going into the well

They have those shovel rake things that clean up dog poop. If you don't have one just take a regular or child sized shovel and rake and scoop it out. It's nice to get things cleaned up at this time of year...good for you.
