..somewhere other than a hospital, is someone told to go boil some water?

In the old days the midwives used to massage the labia with really hot water to stretch it out since they didn't generally do episiotomoies. I don't know if that really did the trick or not, but that's what I read somewhere. Also, the other reason was to keep the husband out of the way and give him something to do.

Usually, if you watch carefully, the job of boiling the water is given to the person that's either going crazy or driving the person that's going to deliver the baby crazy. It's mainly used as a distraction for them, but also to sterilize the tools and soften the cervix.

To sterilize the things that may be used for the baby. Like the scissors to cut the umbilical cord.

in fact they needn't boiling water but need warm water to help cervix of the uterus and vaginal opening to get more dilated to give baby chance to pass through vaginal opening in normal labor
