asking someone their age when they go to buy alcohol, but not actually asking to see ID.

This happened to me today, and yes I am over 18, and I don't have a problem being asked to prove it, but the woman at the checkout just took my word for it. So what was the point in asking?

Checks to stop underage drinkers

Some teenagers may have fake ID, police say
Underage drinkers are the target of a new police campaign which is being launched in Guernsey.
Officers will be making random spot-checks on pubs and clubs and checking people's ID to ensure they are legally allowed to be served alcohol.

Police are concerned teenagers are getting away with using fake documents.

So even when they have id, it still not proving their ages.

By law she probably at least has to ask but she knew you were there before with the correct ID?

the point in asking is so stupid young kids dont walk in and buy drink.
The policy in most places is think 21 so at least they asked but really they should of asked to check id.

True. When I worked at ASDA I asked because we were told to ask, but to be honest unless they looked REALLY young, I sold it anyway. Like you say, they will only lie to you if they're too young and chances are, their I.D is probably false as well.
