In a lot of ways your SOL, things that we buy don't always last as long as we'd like and we have to deal with that.
But you could take it back to Walmart, you don't have to have a receipt to return items to them (you just don't get cash). Just tell them that it doesn't work and they'll give you a gift card in the amount that it is currently selling for in the store.

I was kind of in the same boat. I still have all the recipts for everything because I'm moving about 2 months after the baby is born. I bought the play yard that moves up to a bassinet and it's got a changing table on it. It's really nice I just set it up. I think a stroller is necessary. I bought both the bouncer and the swing. I bought the bobby swing and it's really small like it is as tall as maybe my knee. it folds up to be really small. You can find small bouncers as well. Not everything has to be huge. Just from watching other peoples children. I believe that the swing and a mat for the floor with lights and things for the baby to grap at are really necessary. Bouncers are just nice to have. There is something really cool I got at my shower it's called a womb bear. When you turn it on it makes the same sound as what the baby hears when it's in you. Your heart beat. It is really cool. I haven't used it yet but it's definitely something to check out. People love buying cutesy stuff like that. Good luck!

Just call the store and ask what their return policy is on gifts. And make sure you mention to them that there is no box. They should be able to let you return it with a store credit.
As for the burn smell, I'd definitely call or e-mail the manufacturer to let them know of this problem. It could be the beginning of a recall.

contact the company and also consumer reports. CR may be able to help you or at least let others know that swing has a problem. The store really can't do much about it wo a receipt.
Hope you get your money back. That's so frustrating.

There is a warranty on almost all consumer products BUT warranties are held by the manufacturer. Call the manufacturer and tell them what happened.

Take it back to walmart anyway. Tell them it was a gift and you would like a replacement one. They are usually pretty good about giving you another one.
