I have my nearly 4 year old son and 5 month old daughter in the same room and its not a problem. She's been in there since the day we brought her home from the hospital and he has always slept right through her waking up (and she sleeps through him making noise in there too).

Because my children are different sexes I split the room into sections and decorated each according to the kids. My son is really into outer space so he got blue walls around his bed with stars stamped on in a darker blue. Then I got some solar system fabric and put it on the ceiling over his bed so he can look at the planets. Around the baby's crib the wall is painted pink and I stencilled darker pink hearts and her name on the wall.

If you live or visit somewhere that has an Ikea, they have lots of kids rooms set up and then you can just buy everything that's in the room and recreate it at home.

Suggestion
Divide the look of the room in 2 by placing the baby things on one side and the boys things on the other. The color theme can be light blues and yellow so it goes for both sexes in case the baby is a girl. If it is a girl, you can add some pink accents on her side later on. if the baby is a boy . baby items on his wall will go great with the big boy things.

dresser with his/her pictures by the crib and changing table, and at the other side of the room big boy bed with his dresser featuring things that he likes ( dinosaurs, cars etc)

To bring 2 sides together place a soft rug between the 2 sides .

I Hope it helps to bring out some ideas

5 yr old girl & 4 yr old boy share a room & have since about 2 & 3. We have always had a half for her & a half for him. We painted in our last house a green colr that matched both of their bedding. She has white furniture & his is cherry wood. Her stuff is butterflies & flowers, while his is space. That way when the older one changes interests or gets picky like my boy does you dont have to redo a whole room, just half

personally i would keep the baby in your room until he/she was about 1...after that work on a theme.
i only say that because it isnt fair for the toddler to have a baby waking him up every few hours at night...and it isnt fair for the toddler not to be able to play in his room when the baby is asleep...i think your 4 yr old will respond better to having to share his room if he has time to get to know the baby.

having them share a room is just setting you up for a very cranky 4 year old.think about how you feel with very little sleep. and times that by a millon ..not a happy time keep the baby with you for at least year or untill you are sure he/she is sleeping through the night.. and then let you son help chosse a room design for him and his sibling
