Unfortunately I have a standard but the D means "drive" and the D3 means "drive 3" or basically third gear if your thinking in terms of a standard. My husband said that you mainly use D3 or D2 in the snow. I would suggest to just use D for now and if it does snow you can use D2 or 3.

Your Civic has 4 gears.

When it is set for D, the gear changes from 1, 2, 3, and to 4 AS NEEDED and automatically.

When it is set for D3, it goes up but stops at 3. (Never get to 4) The only time this is useful is when you are going down hill so that you want some braking action from your engine, or going up hill so that you want more torque. When you are going up hill, if you leave it in D, it tends to shift back and forth too frequently. (called hunting)

Normally, you leave it in D.

OK...D stands for DRIVE and D3 stands for DRIVE in 3rd gear. You use D3 for city driving. Do not go over like 65 MPH in D3. If you're planning to use the freeway/highway, use D. Hope that helps.
