Over about3,4,or 5 months ago my mom bought me a healthy RES named Shellby. Her red stripe was bright. Then afew hours ago I noticed that there was a blotchy black spot in the middle of each stripe. What does this mean? is this bacteria or is she just becoming a adult? PLEASE ANSWEAR

Settle down. It is not a bacteria. It is a sign that she is growing up into an adult. You should be happy for her and I am happy for both of you and glad you have a pet to worry about unlike me.

Becoming an adult. As RES's age, they turn darker and duller. You notice this first in the bright colors.

Most adult RES still have the color stripe, butit is often more of a brick red or even burgandy, and the shell can darken almost to a dark green/black in many cases.

Here are some photos of adult RES: http://www.austinsturtlepage.com/world_of_turtles/Red-eared_Sliders_-Trachemys_scripta_elegans/index.html
