So far it has taken 35 minutes. It is a new laptop. No threats detected as yet.

I believe it is the first automatic scan since I downloaded AVG as I stopped the last one when I first downloaded the AVG software.

Does a scan take this long? Is it normal?

Is it normal to take so long?

it is perfectly normal ;) i just got a new laptop about a month ago and i started using avg last week it took me close to 45mins. the time it takes to scan depends on the number of files you have. so over time when you have more files it takes longer.

meanwhile dont worry. sit back and cheers.

This is a normal scan time if you have a large number of files. For your next scan however you can set the scan parameters to scan only critical areas of your computer instead of everything. This way it should only take a few minutes. Do this by finding the preferences or settings menu.

Ya dude everything is going okay, AVG takes this much time to scan, moreover you can get rid of this scanning at every boot, you just change the scanning time in AVG's settings...

I have AVG and it normally takes my laptop 45 minutes to complete the scan. (I just finished one as a matter of fact.)

your pc was being scanned in about 35 mins but my one takes more than 1 hr. it depends on the scan setup configuring given to your AVG 's default settings and it scanned at boot as it was the default scan time or scan boot ing was enabled that you haven't personalised or customised..

I had a lot of trouble with AVG and then I had an even worse time trying to get it off my machine. I paid for the new CD they had and it was horrible. Never again

well since it is a new laptop, im guessing you got a bigger hard drive so it would take longer to scan more space.
also i have a 200gb hard drive and when i run automatic scan it takes about 2 hours, but i just ignore it cause my pc is fast and i don't notice it running.
