Hello,
I have a rabbit that does this and I have come to the conclusion that it either sleeps VERY soundly - or it's hearing isn't as sharp as the others.

Does your guinea pig seem frightened when it does realise that you are there, or nervous when you are handling it at all? If not then I wouldn't suspect it to be a fright reaction - more that it was unaware that you were there.

If your guinea pig is normal in every other way, I shouldn't worry too much, but keep a close eye on it and if anything else worries you, or this behaviour changes in any way, I'd take your piggie to the vet for a check up.
Hope this helps.

I have never known a guinea pig to play dead. Are you sure its not sick? They do take frequent naps, but it should raise its head if you come near, talk to it, or pet it. If it just lays there after petting it, I would take the piggie to the vet for a check up. Is piggie eating, drinking, & pooing good? Are you feeding it good hay & pellets, as well as fresh green veggies? Inactivity is usually a sign something is wrong.

mine did the same thing, hold it for a while, and give it carrots often. [[while holding it]] make it feel secure. hold it at the same time everyday, for AT LEAST 30 minuets or more. after about a week, it should become excited to see you and not play dead. Do NOT skip a day of holding it and giving it treats. also, if it bites you, don't jump or scream, just sit there until it lets go, its the same with birds. i know, it hurts, but you have to show our guinea pig that you love it, but that you are also in charge.

well thats different! do you think its maybe sleeping??i have had guinea pigs for near 40 years, and never seen one playing dead..is it eating well, pooping firm pellets? no hair loss? guinea pigs need vitamin C as they like humans cannot make it in their body. they can get scurvy! always have some fresh food even if you give pellets or other bought rations.

The guinea pig mayhave something wrong with it's body or heart and you should bring it to the vet for they can see what is wrong .

Get something like a plastic pipe where he could go hide. It is normal for them to run and hide.

Give it a couple of places to run and hide in. If he/she doesn't have anywhere to go, why would he/she bother moving?
