Do it yourself. Most concrete contractors don't want the small jobs when they could be doing bigger jobs for more money in the same time window. Cracks can be filled with concrete crack filler that you can find at any Home Depot or Lowes or hardware store. Its self leveling and easy to use. If your cracks are larger than 1/4 inch, you probably want to cut out the parts that are cracked and crumbling with a cement saw blade on a circular saw and put new cement down in those spots so it doesn't look patchy. If its in an area that your don't care about appearance, just mix up a batch of concrete in a wheel barrow and fill it in yourself with a trowel. If you need it too look like a professional did it, then you will need to find someone to do it.

RE:
How do I repair a concrete walkway without costing thousands of dollars?
There are cracks and parts of the concrete are chipping and crumbling away.

There are ways of doing it, but it's a lot of trouble and usually don't turn out too well. The preferred method would be to add cement to the top of the slab that has sunk. But unless the whole repair is at least 3 inches deep, it won't last long. It would be a nice weekend project to take a sledge hammer, bust up the one piece of slab and form a new one. Then when you're finished, you'll know it's done right and will probably outlast the rest of your sidewalk. Invite a friend over that has some experience with cement, buy a pizza and a few cold ones and make a day of it.

there have been tremendous breakthroughs is concrete resurfacing products in just the last 10 years. many to choose from but the question is the concrete in a condition that is worth the cost of "repair" or does it simply need "replaced"
These products while amazing are only as good as the sub-straight it is applied to. without seeing what you are talking about it sounds like it needs replaced. Make a "sidewalk" jar and start putting money away to have it replaced. for regular broom finish you should not pay anywhere near 10-12sq' . out here in the highest market we are only getting 15-18sq' for colored & stamped and that is on the high end. Just call for some estimates and see what the price is, it cant hurt. try this site for the latest info on products available.

there are concrete fillers at home depot or lowe's if you just want to fill the cracks and holes but if you really want to make it look good you have to replace it all and thats pretty expensive. The truth is that many "established" companies have way higher expenses and bills when it comes to charging for concrete repair. If you go to a housing community in construction and ask the builder to lend you a concrete guy, theyll do it for a flat rate if you show them the entire job and its usually cheaper than the established businesses. thats assuming the builder aint an asshole and doesnt tell you to bug off

No "repair" to concrete will be cheap. Chances are if your sidewalk is spalling and cracking it needs to be replaced. There is no good way to resurface concrete it will eventually chip out and look the same as it does now. IMO I would replace the walk. It should run in the neighborhood of $10-14 s.f.

At home improvement stores, they make a "fix-all" specially for concrete. It is a powder you mix with water to make a putty to fill in the cracks. It is usually in the building department or the paint department. It doesn't cost much... but I don't know how long it will last either.

Quikrete makes a concrete resurfacer. We did a portion of the driveway. Wish we had done the whole thing.
