My little guy is almost two and has always been a good crib sleeper. He shows no signs of wanting to climb out or anything, lol; I think he likes the security of it. I don't see a big reason to change our set-up yet, and am a little wary of changing things. I know when we try to put him down to sleep in a toddler bed he'll be able to just hop out and get right back up and I'm reluctant to have to deal with that (though I know we will have to eventually). When did you move your little one from a crib to a bed, and how did it go? Any tips?

They just had this same question in May's Parents Magazine. Here's the advice given in the magazine:

"Most children move to a toddler bed between ages 2 and 3, but it's actually best to wait until closer to 3. At that point, your son will be more developmentally ready for a bed. Young toddlers often have trouble staying in a bed because they don't understand its imaginary boundaries. You'd be better off buying a see-through mesh crib tent that attaches to the top of his crib with Velcro and prevents him from being able to climb out. I've found that most toddlers love having one of these because it seems like a fun tent that's only for big kids."

But there are some kids who can handle it sooner, we switched our son at the age of two and didn't have any problems with him getting out of it, he still waited for us to come get him. You know your son best, so you'll have to see if you think that he's able to understand that he has to stay in it even though he is able to get out.

They don't need to be moved until they start climbing out of their crib.

My first started doing it at about 3 years old and my daughter now at 2.5 can climb in, but hasn't tried to climb out.

For my son, we just took the side railing off his crib and converted it to a day bed so no transition issues - he was still sleeping in the same bed and still is in his day bed crib and he's going to be 4 on Wednesday.

If you wait until your son is climbing out of his crib on his own regularly, then you're already dealing with him getting up and out when he wants so that makes it a good time to switch. If he's happy in there still then leave him be.

The longer they stay in the crib the better (as far as I'm concerned).

I would suggest to buy the cribs that converts to a toddler bed than a full size bed. They are really not as much money as the normal crib they are in the crib for around 1 1/2 to 2 years, they bassinet, I would suggest you buy the playpen with the bassinet with it. I wouldn't buy a separate bassinet, mine only slept in it for six weeks. Congratulations!!!

My daughters were all about 2 when they went from a crib to a toddler bed and I think for the most part it went smoothly. We reinforced that they were "big" kids now and if you are consistent with them it will work out....Good LUck!
