I think marriage counseling should be manditory to get a Marriage License. And the age limit should be changed to 25 because there are too many young kids getting married without having the chance to experience life.

In our 'throw away' society, we have become so accustomed to getting rid of what does not work any more, that I think that mentality has also infiltrated the institution of marriage. Very sad. Anything in this world worth having is worth working for and anything worth keeping is worth the work it takes to keep it. I am not saying some divorces are not legitimite, but I think many could be avoided if people stopped to think more before they got married and worked harder at staying married instead of taking the easy way out. Should it be made harder to get a divorce or get married? I think there are enough laws telling people how to behave. But making the penalties higher for divorces could make people think a little harder before getting married, thus possibly lowering the divorce rate . But then that just encourages more people to simply live togeather without the sanction of marriage. Is this any better? Sadly, there are no easy solutions. People's mentality has to change.

It should be made much harder to get married. There should be at least a year mandatory waiting period from the time you apply for the marriage license to the time you can get married. Making people take a year or more to really think about their decision would help a lot.

Also, the price of the marriage license should go up dramatically the younger the applicants are who want to be married. So, for example, if both people are over age 26, they could get a marriage license for the standard rate (in Delaware it costs about $30). But, if one or both of the applicants were 21-25, their license would cost around $1500, and if one or both of them were 18-20, it would be about, say, $2000. This would force young people to really be sure they want to marry in order to shell out that kind of cash, and it would force many young couples to wait until they're older, and many of those marriages would not take place.

The younger in age a couple is, the higher chance there is of divorce. That's a statistical fact. People that marry their high school sweethearts at 18 have a very little chance of staying married for life. Forcing people to wait to get married will give people a chance to grow up and actually have an ide of what they want in life, because it is really hard to know that at 18 or even at 21.

The divorce rate has gone up because people are marrying, divorcing, and re-marrying - causing the ratio to be higher than it should.

People also get divorced because they cannot handle commitment, responsibility, acception, and adulthood.

Some people are divorcinge because they were married to the above, or worse. Child abusers, porn-freaks, cheater, pedifylers, and so on. There are so many reasons why people are getting divorced now adays. It is so crazy. Some are just because they are not sexually atracted to the person they were with, while they were still married to another person, and having an afair, and now the 'spontenuity' or the 'sneakiness' isn't there anymore, and it's just 'meaningless sex!!'

Personally I think that people have more freedoms now. More specifically women, in the past women had to put up with abuse, infidelity etc. now they can easily get out without the stigma of divorce. Also children learn by example alot of children come from divorced parents. And really does marriage mean the same as it use too? People are also not afraid of the church as they once were. It's just a society evolving.

The only reason why divorce is going up over the years, because couples do not know what Love is, they do not know when to get married and they do not know when to have a child.

To have a wonderful relationship, you have to be together for approximate 3-5 years, in order to know everything you could know about eachother and when you both decide that you can't live without eachother, that is when you get married.

You then stay married for approximately one year, before you have children, because you don't even know what it's like to be married and enjoying just the two of you.

Nobody seems to know that Love makes life so simple and so wonderful. Why do people have to rush? RUSH FOR WHAT, TO RUIN YOUR LIFE?

If you think your in love and you get married or pregnant at the wrong time, your hurting yourselves and that child, because your getting a divorce.

Divorce rates have gone up with women's liberation. Women no longer look for a husband who is going to take care of them financially and they no longer settle. This is good, but it also changed the rules of dating and marriage.

Now that women do not have defined roles, the roles for men are even less defined. What we need are classes taught in High Schools on what makes a marriage. There are basic ingredients that make a marriage last. A couple needs to be best friends, they need to trust each other and they need to love each other unconditionally.

Before getting married every couple should be required to take a class on marriage. Couples need to be taught how to share responsibility, money and time. If couples were more prepared for marriage, they would be less likely to bring about bad matches or to divorce.

Take care,
Troy

I think the main reason that the divorce rate has gone up is because people are brought up to just give up instead of trying to work things out. It goes along with a strong work ethic. People that I know that have gotten divorced have a poor work ethic and cannot keep a job for long. They just move on to the next thing without really trying to improve their current situation. People also do not know how to communicate. They think yelling at each other is communication, when they should be sitting down and talking to each other.

The problem is that for the several decades now kids have been raised to believe the world revolves around them, when people raised this way marry, they have no clue how to take responsibility, respect others, or compromise.
P.S> for all the people that feel those getting divorced are lazy and take the easy way out....apparently they have never been through a divorce.

You can lower the divorce rate by not getting married.

Marriage is the biggest cause of divorce.

we all need to be less uptight abotu marriage, and realize that sometimes it just doesn't work out. and the reason rates are up, is because women now have the right, and OPTIONS if they leave, to leave men that treat them poorly. vice versa, of course, but men could always leave women. it used to be women had no options, now with so many working, and educated, they realize they dont NEED a man to take care of them, and they go on their merry way to make a better life for themselves.

no amount of time spent with the other person will guarantee a successful marriage. I have known people who dated, lived together, everything, for YEARS before they get married. and then, it just doesn't work for them. maybe they shouldn't have gotten amrried in the 1st place, but if you love someone, you dont' necessarily think clearly.

We get "2nd chances" on everything we do in life. everyone makes mistakes. so why should marriage be any different? people make bad choices every day. marriage needs to be viewed more as a relationship, and not a life long contract!
