Flush it down the loo!! Or otherwise drive the 3 hours back to the beach if you think that is cruel to flush it away!!

Was it in the water when you picked it up or just in the dry sand? I believe you have a land hermit crab and it needs to be taken out of the water. If you can take a picture of it and send it to me I could tell you what you have. I have 51 crabs and love everyone of them. I wish I could have found some on the beach when I was there. If it does live and you do keep it get him/her a friend. Hope this helps.

That's OK. You don't have to take it back to the beach. You can keep it as a pet! I had two of them for a year that a friend gave me as a birthday present. Go to the pet store and they'll hook you up with a hermit crab kit, which is pretty inexpensive. It's just a small tank, something to hold water in, and something to hold their food in. I also had a small star-shaped spunge that I filled with water every once in a while. They like to drink. And I bought this small lagoon-type thing so they could go in and get wet if they wanted. For a while I even had them in a big shoebox filled with the special sand for crabs that is kind to their claws. And if you do decide to keep it, you might want to consider buying another one. They're social creatures. And pick up a couple of bigger empty shells so that when they grow, they can move into the bigger shell.
But if you don't want to keep it, just take it to the pet store. I bet they'd take it off your hands.

People keep hermit crabs as pets. I would take him out of the salt water though. Get a small aquarium and put sand in it. Get a shallow water dish and put a sponge in it. Make sure to keep it wet and clean. Change the sand every so often. They sell hermit pellets at the pet store. If you have further questions a pet store would be able to help you as they are popular pets lately.

Did he discover them contained in the water or on the coastline? There are land hermit crabs and there are aquatic hermit crabs. the way you're taking care of them relies upon upon which style you've. All in all, the perfect project for the crabs ought to in all likelihood be to placed them decrease back on the coastline, yet when which could no longer an option for you, a minimum of attempt to make certain what variety you've.

If you are in the US and it didn't come from the florida keys then it is a marine hermit crab. If you don't want to drive the 3 hrs to return it to the ocean you could take it to a pet store that sells salt water fish and see if they will take it or do an offer ad on freecycle for anyone who has a salt water aquarium to take it. Or if you boil it the crab will die and come out of the shell and you have yourself a shell. The most expensive option you have is to set up a salt water aquarium for it.

Ummmmm, this happened to me and the crab died after about two weeks. you really need to put it back in the water. Do you know anyone who lives there? You could try mailing it 3 days. I left the little bugger in the truck for three days because I didnt realize it was even in there, and it lived through that. So if you could maybe fed ex it back to someone, for about 5 dollars. You could probably wrap it up in some wet paper towels and punch holes in the box. Maybe not real obvious holes. But something where it could get air. And then put the wet towel around it? I dont know. But you gotta get it back to the ocean.
