Why are 75% of people in yahoo!Answers unable to recognize sarcasm. Do you think its a genetic anomoly. Perhaps they are sarcasm impaired. Should we spend millions of government research dollors looking into this frightening phenomenom?

Text has no inflection or tone which can be part of the problem but overall sarcasm still can be typed and non verbally expressed just fine. I think it does take the right person with the right sense of humor but people just take things at a face value and people need to LIGHTEN UP.

I've been asking myself that for a while now. Maybe you've seen my question on what I should tattoo on my sleeping friend. Granted, I could see how this could possibly be taken sort of seriously, but most people should see I was joking. I got about 30 answers from people advising me against permanently scarring my friend as a prank.

I have encountered that in life as well. Sarcasm is a higher form of intelligence so maybe some people just don't get it.

Before you get mad, look it up. I found this out from a psychology textbook in college.

I think it should be taught in schools, myself. See, people are overly optimistic, in my opinion: they want the universe to conform to their own standards, so that they can live happy lives without confusing their tiny little intelligences, and they expect the rest of us to support the illusion. That's why I usually try to piss on such parades whenever possible... It's very amusing, although in a non-subtle way. Sorry...

Because sarcasm comes out better through sound not typed words. There are no emotions in typed up words. Not unless you count the smiley faces.

Sarcasm? What sarcasm? I take every question here in answers.yahoo very seriously.

Also, if you read it on the Internet, it must be true, right?

Even an idiot can recognize sarcasm, it is "irony", sarcasm's educated cousin, that most---especially Americans---have difficulty with.

Because most people are stupid. You have to be intelligent to catch a sarcastic remark. Sadly we are a country of stupid people that really should be wearing their signs.
