The biggest plus to me is the fact that you don't have to start with and then maintain a group of them. Once you have a school of fish that grows a bit and several die then it's quite difficult sometimes to get more of the proper size to replenish the school so you end up with just a few that don't do well.

As already mentioned, the main advantage is that you don't have to get groups of fish and can get only one. The problem is that most community fish that are suitable for the average aquarium (less than 60 gallons) are schooling fish. There are very few fish that will go in a community environment that are loners.

I don't see how there can be advantages of either. It really depends on what type of tank you want, but I find that most nice tanks have both schooling and non-schooling fish in it. Many non-schooling fish can be territorial, which can be a disadvantage. Some non-schoolers can be shy, in which case a calm group of schoolers can actually help them feel more comfortable. I suppose if there's any advantages to the solitary or pairing types, it's that they tend to have more character then schooling types.

Basically to "fill" up your tank. Fish tend to occupy different levels of space in a tank. There are bottom dwellers, mid tank swimmers and fish varieties that like to hang out at the surface ares more. Schooling fish are nice to have in a few groups to provide movement in a tank where as a loner or non schooler will provide interest. So for good variety, choose a few "flashy" guys to swim about as loners as long as they are compatable with your other community fish.

For me the advantage is you dont have to keep as many as withc schooling fish. Usually if you have schooling fish you should have atleast 5 to keep them happy. If you go with non schooling fish you can have only one or 2.

Hello.
You can get 1 or 2 and not 6 or 10. Schooling fish are more likely to defend each other and tend to be less territorial. Non-schooling fish however are going to likely fend for themselves and be a bit more territorial.
Hope this helps! :-)
