As long as you breastfeed you will continue to produce milk. You will only stop producing milk (and excess weight) when you stop breastfeeding. The act of breast feeding will not cause you to loose weight itself. Eating fewer calories or burning more calories will.

You burn 20 cal an ounce just to produce the milk (plus the cals in the milk itself is also about 20 an ounce. So the 500 cal a day is about right, that would be about 12 ounces of milk. Mine were going thru about 36-50 ounces a day at some points.

It takes 3500 cal to lose a pound. So that works out to a pound a week (7x500), if you bf 12 ounces a day.

Mathmatically speaking, if you were to NOT increase your diet becuase you were BF'ing, You could/would lose 1 pound every week.

Fat is 3500 Calories per pound. BF'ing is 500 calories a day. 500x7 = 3500 calories, or one pound.

However dont forget that your appetite increases when you breastfeed, and you do retain more water. However if you are able to lose thorughout breastfeeding, you'll probably also lose a couple pounds when you stop and your milk dries up.

actually, weight loss due to breast-feeding is a myth, even though some women swear by it. while it can help you use calories (as a previous poster said, it takes about 500 calories/day to breastfeed), if you don't get some exercise, and don't watch your calorie intake, you are not going to lose any weight.

look at it this way, 500 calories/day is about one turkey on whole wheat sandwich with lettuce and tomato... the average woman should consume no more than 2000 calories/day - and while you should definitely eat healthy while breastfeeding, you still should not eat more than 2000 calories/day unless you are very very active and burning more calories than you consume.

You loose a lot of pounds the first week, the more you breastfed , the more weight you loose. I lost about 75 lbs. most of it was pregnancy weight and lots was water weight gain from the IV but I lost it with in 6 weeks.

While you may think brestfeeding will help you loose weight, you will also produce more milk, which really cancels out the weight lose. Until you quit brest feeding and begin excercising you will not lose a steady amount of weight.
