I moved into a house last June and had a brand new garbage disposal installed, never had issues with it. A couple of months later we bought a dishwasher from Best Buy and had them install it for us. After that the disposal sounded like there was something loose in there. We called a plumber and he said the disposal was shot because a valve was missing and I have a feeling Best Buy tinkered with it to install the dishwasher.

Long story short, we have to get a new disposal and a new valve, total bill $315. Is there a way to egt Best Buy to pay that, is that covered under warranty?

Thanks!

You can certainly give it a try, but it may end up being a "he said, she said" situation. The installer will probably say he didn't touch the disposal, and you will be out the money for the repair, but you never know.

Let the landlord find the the garbage disposal, she collects rent from you each month and also has a tax write off at the end of the year for all repairs. It's nice that you want to help but you just might find a cheap one that only lasts a short time then what happens when it goes out again. Ebay is not the place to look for an item like that, you have no way to check the operation or if it will fit your sink.

Best Buy contracts the installation out to a sub. I doubt that you will get them to pay for it. They will go to the sub and ask him and it will be a he said , they said, situation. There will be no proof of what happened.
If this problem happened when the dishwasher was installed, then it should have been brought to the attention of the installer. Once he left, that is like saying you agree with the installation and all is well.

I hope you can present this problem to Best Buy and get some satisfaction from them. They may not want to lose you as a customer and may cough up some cash, but it looks bleak at the moment.

the plumber hosed you. the sound you heard when you ran your disposal was the metal plug that the installer from best buy failed to pull out of the disposal when he knocked it out to connect your new dishwasher drain.
the only valve the plumber could have been talking about would have been an antiphon valve, that would have been installed between the dishwasher and the dishwasher drain on the side of the disposal

i agree with the last answer.. attaching the dw to the disposal is about as easy as it gets.. i agree that they probably knocked the plug into the disposal and never took it out.. you should remove the disposal and see if you can find it or anything else knocking around in there.. could be a bottle cap.. who knows.. $315? you can buy and install a disposal yourself in about 15 minutes.. it is extremely easy.. i have done multiple installs myself.. no way i pay $315 for that..

good luck..

Contact Best Buy and talk to the manager. The work should be covered by the contractor that installed it but BB probably hired them. Don't let him/her tell you there is nothing that can be done (which is probably going to be the first answer you get).

If they screwed it up, they are responsible even without warranty.
At worst (if they won't respond positively) there is always small claims court.
