Omnivore or herbivore is irrelevant. The only fish suitable for a 2 gallon tank is a betta.

Goldfish are the most hardy fish around and can live for close to 50 years in the proper settings and grow to over a foot long. In properly filtered/proper sized tanks they can live for 20+ years.

The reason you are losing them is that they aren't in a big enough tank and don't have proper filtration. The ammonia leel builds and they die from ammonia poisoning. A single goldfish should be in a tank of at least 20 gallons and need extra filtration as they are big waste producers. Each additional fish need an additional 10 gallons.

Edit: Do not put a betta in a vase with a plant. First, they are surface breathers and the plant blocks their access to the surface to breath. Second, they do not eat plant roots and will stare to death unless properly fed. Third, they need good water parameters in a filtered tank unless you are going to do 100% water changes daily.

Bettas are omnivores not strict carnivores. If you are talking about an unfilter bowl or tank, then a betta is the only realistic choice. Even then you will need to do water changes every 2-3 days. If you mean a filtered and heated environment then there are a number of livebearers and killifish that would do quite well in a 2 gallon tank. Endlers guppies, fancy guppies, least killifish (which despite the common name is a live bearer), and probably over 50 species of small killifish would do very well in your tank. Killifish are often quite difficult to find in aquarium stores and I would suggest you use one of the online auction sites to find them after selecting a few species that would suit you.

Betta fish (or Siamese fighting fish) are perfect for you given your criteria. Bettas are relatively easy to care for and their low maintenance is particularly appealing to people who would like to have fish but don’t have a lot of time to care for them. They come in wonderful colors and are quite beautiful. Also, they are very inexpensive.

A few tips though:

1. Make sure the jar or bowl that you keep a Betta in is big enough so that he can swim around and not bump or tear his fins or scales. Also be sure there is plenty of surface area so that he can get enough oxygen,

2. Bettas will thrive in the cleanest water that you can provide for him. They do not require a filtration system, but you should change out a third of the water every three days so it stays fresh and clean and keeps the Betta from getting bacterial or fungal infections. Aged water (water that has set out for twenty four hours) is what should be used to replace the old water, and

3. Do not put Betta fish with other Bettas. They are called Siamese fighting fish because they are, in fact, fighting fish. They will tear at one another, often causing the death of at least one fish before they stop.

Follow these tips and you will enjoy having a Betta.

Bettas are good, they can live in a small amount of water but, only one in the bowl have to keep by themselves or they will fight.I use to see them in a clear vase with a few rocks in the bottom and a piece lilly in the water also just cut the roots and emerge them in the water it was pretty neat but as far as fish go try a beta. They eat special for just for them the guy at walmart or the pet store will show you the type of food. good luck.

I've had common goldfish live for years. You need to provide proper filtration, any fish will die fast in an unfiltered still water fish bowl. Don't disregard the ten cent fishies!

In such a small tank, nothing. Taken care of properly, gold fish live 20+ years.
Seems like you aren't interested in taking proper care of any fish, so I'd suggest this:

Ha ha. You're right about the survival rate for goldfish! How about a Beta fish? They come in lots of colors, and you can put them in water in a vase under a plant which looks really nice.
