The River Mersey has 2 sides! The Liverpool side & the Wirral side, so if you live on the Wirral, Wallasey, Birkenhead, Ellesmere Port etc. , you are not from Liverpool, but you are from Merseyside.

Merseyside is a county, that contains the City of Liverpool in it. Other County boroughs within Merseyside are Sefton, Knowsley, Wirral and St Helens.truly speaking you can only say that you live in Liverpool if in fact you live in the city of Liverpool. Any of the other towns within Merseyside, you should say for example "I live in St.Helens Merseyside".

liverpool is the city and merseyside is the county, so if they live outside the city centre, they'll be in one of the many boroughs of liverpool, but its all within merseyside. Then theres the wirral, and thats just a different kettle of scousers all together!
