Edgar Allan Poe has a lot of good short stories.. Not terrifying horror, but thrillers... The Black Cat, The Tell Tale Heart.. a few others....
Ummm, Shirley Jackson's "The Lottery" has a kind of eerie tone to it....
A Lamb To The Slaughter, (forget the author) is a murder mystery worth a read.

Edgar Allen Poe is always fabulous.
There's always Hans Christian Anderson or the original Grimm Fairy Tales. Not precisely horror, but certainly dark. How they ever turned them into Disney kid's movies...
Heart of Darkness by Joseph Conrad is an amazing story, very much about the horror found within the heart of each individual.
And Shakespeare's Macbeth is truly great, full of witches and murder and political maneuvering.
