I dont understand the very end of the movie, when that woman and her daughter arrive home. Are they still in another world, and is that why the husband doesn't see them? I am SO confused. A little help would be great.

Funny, I'm watching the movie as this question popped up.
The Silent Hill games all have multiple endings, determined very much on the way you play. None of the endings are really definatively happy endings. (I think this is because the games are Japanese, the story telling conventions are different and decidedly foreign to people used to western films).
The daughter was never 'real' she was an embodiment of the innocence of the demon girl, Alyssa, In fighting to preserve that innocence the mom sacrificed herself. I don't know if they are dead exactly, but they aren't stuck in the hell of Silent Hill. The interesting thing about Silent Hill (and this is apparent in the games) is that it gives you what you want to be true. The crazy people wanted to stand against demons and evil. Alyssa wanted vengeance. Once the crazy people were gone, Mom and Daughter only wanted to be away and at peace, so the town gave them that. They might actually be at home or only in a place of their own making and they may or may not be dead. As far as not being back with her husband, there are two things to point out there. One, throughout the movie, mom only wants to rescue her daughter, she doesn't actually want to get back to her husband. Two, in the original script there were no male characters (well not human males at least). The husband was tacked on at the insistence of studio heads who thought it would make it more palatable to audiances.

I asked the same question after watching it. I played the video games so I thought I'd 'get' the movie. You're guess is as good as mine, they may be living on another 'plane' but I suppose by our definition, they may as well be dead. I think it's meant to make you wonder and I found it a bit annoying. Obviously, they did NOT come back to the 'real' world though.

Yes, they are still stuck in another world. Or, one could also read that as meaning that they're basically dead - only they don't know it. So, it's like a tragic end. The mom can finally rest, because she saved her daughter from that tortuous "dark" realm, but in doing so, she's not able to return to this world.

yes ,they are stuck on another world.....the world that the little girl made up ......she wants her and her mom to be in it she doesnt like her dad that much notice as she walks to her room at the end she still has the evil smile.......i had to watch it twice to figure it out
