Their advice probably isn't worth much but you can still learn a lot from them, mostly in form of what NOT to do.

I value their advice, when I ask for it. I just don't follow it. There are still occasionally things that they know that can apply. Besides, asking your folks for advice also makes them feel useful and results in a better relationship with them. This is more helpful than rolling your eyes at the latest stupid thing they just did. Just try to avoid asking for advice in areas where you know the advice is useless.

Always keep in mind that your parents often have a different viewpoint and while their advice not apply, it may help you by seeing the matter in a different light.

You may ask for it, which would be respectful.
Yet, You have Your Own mind to take what You believe is best or not.
As any one elses, it just depends on the subject.
If You believe Your parents are the most authoritative or knowledgeable persons about the subject of Your matters, then don't see them as Your parents, but as the best experts, let's say!

Good luck! Bear hugs! ;-)

I would sift through it and listen to their words, though ignore their actions. Sometimes people can know in their mind and heart what to do, but don't have the strength to apply it. However, if I discern that their advice would lead me to a similar lifestyle that they are living, then I would not listen to it at all.

depends on the advice and the subject. If you're 40 don't seek their approval, use common sense

Everyone gets it right, some of the time.

You can listen to their advice. You don't have to follow it, though.

And, every failure is a lesson learned, right? So, if they've screwed up a lot, then they've learned a lot about what not to do, anyway.

You don't have to be smart to have a kid, just have a working egg and sperm get together. You can not pick your parents. Sorry to say many are ego centered mentally unhealthy people. If they are unmarried/ divorced/ druggies/drinkers/smoker or have illegitimate children I would say they don't deserve any respect.

Be a discerning adult and pick and choose their advice. If it's good, take it, if it's bad, dump or ignore it. Simple.
