I have just purchased my first tortoise.... I want to make sure I am doing the best for him. I have noticed when he awakes he keeps the same eye closed for a longer period before eventually opening it. And since I have gotten him 2 days ago, he has slowed down in activity and really hasn't ate. Today I fed him a dandelion and tried to give him grass, He took one bite of the dandelion thus far. I have given him water and everytime he drinks, he uses the bathroom but the stool is loose. Any suggestions on the health of my leopard tortoise named "Zamani"

I just noticed the eye that he keeps closed at times... is watering, and is foggy while his other eye is clear. I have a heat lamp on 24hrs. but he tends to hide in some leaves in his chill spot. I just brought home some spring mix hoping something will get him to eat...and finally he chowed down on a couple leaves : ) At 2mos. how much and often should he be eating?

You're probably keeping this tortoise too dry. It's a misconception that desert torts should be kept on a dry substrate. Research shows that they spend much of their time in burrows where the humidity is about 70%, so provide him with a suitable substrate and soak a few times a day until the eyes open easily upon wakening. Make sure you have a range of temperatures in the enclosures with a cool side of about 70° and the basking area of about 95°. For good care info go to www.africantortoise.com and follow the care info there for a healthy little tortoise.

This kitten needs a vet - no longer guesses from human beings on the internet. If it really is a sparkling kitten then taking it to the vet should be the first project you do. Any type of factors will be incorrect - a watch an infection, a corneal abrasion, an top respiration an infection. turn off the computing device. flow to the vet.

He sounds chilled, and loose bowels are not a great sign either.

You do not tell us a lot, so the best I can do is to suggest you go to a good website for this species- http://www.tortoisetrust.org or http://africantortoise.com
