if for ANY reason you cannot get your taxes in on time you need to file for an extension. Otherwise you're setting yourself up for trouble from the IRS and noone wants the IRS mad at them. Just try to be safe rather than being sorry. File for the extension.

It makes no difference if you wish to avoid paying the penalties for late filing you must file an extension.
