MAN! The answers these people come up with is incredible! First off, DO NOT USE THE OLD GAS PIPE FOR DRINKING WATER! Older houses did have galvanized pipes installed for gas, but now it is unacceptable to use. Now we use black steel pipe. Copper pipes were also used, but it also, is unacceptable to use. You would "taste" the gas in your water,if you used the old pipe, that is why you don't want to use it. If the old gas pipe is disconnected, remove it, and depending on the type pipe that is acceptable in your city, install that pipe in the holes that are existing. If you decide to use copper pipe, and your service is galvanized pipe, you need a dielectric coupling, or union, to transition between the 2 dissimilar metals. Make sure, that you put the union in an accessible location, and not inside the wall. Which ever type pipe you decide to use, make sure, that if it is in an exterior wall, you insulate the water pipes, to keep them from freezing. Good luck!

NO NO NO gas pipe cannot not be used to transport water.
First off the gas pipe will erode and rust out in no time, and also think about all of the smutz that has collected in the gas pipe system over the years.
It is totally un healthy to do this..

If it is a modern installation it will be a copper gas pipe and this is exactly the same with the same joints etc as a water pipe. I see no reason for not using it if it is this specification. It is very easy to say NO to everything that is technical

For a start, water pipes are not galvanised to stop rusting, it is the copper stops them rusting. As for running water through an old gas pipe. As long as it is a copper pipe, I wouild say yes you can.

You will have residual gas in the pipe if it is steel. Most gas lines are black steel pipe while most water lines are galvanized steel. Do what you need to, but, do not use the gas line for water.

don't do it, please don't,
their are so many things that can go wrong, as well as health risks, rip it out and use the holes to put in a fresh pipe in for the water, using the old holes will save loads of effort, and is so much safer.
