They are different types of media.
CD-R holds about 700 megabytes of data or music
DVD-R holds 4.7 gigabytes of data or video

In order to play (or record a DVD) your computer must have a DVD player/recorder. A DVD player/recorder will play/record a CD but a CD player/recorder will NOT play or record a DVD.

Yes, there is a huge difference. CDs store about 700 Meg of data and need a CD capable drive and DVDs store about 4.7 Gig if info and require a DVD capable drive.

DVDs will not work in a CD only drive.

You have to have a DVD writer in order to burn/save things to DVD. It's possible your drive is only capable of writing CDs.

If that is not the case and you know you are capable of writing DVDs, ensure you are selecting DVD from your burning software. It's possible you have CD selected, but are trying to use a DVD.
