I think that may be where we are taking our trip this year, we got an excellent flight deal. I'm just trying to figure up about how much money to take. I'm SO excited!

main thing when thinking of how much money to take is to remember at the moment the exchange rate to euros is very bad....As for cost its not much different than in the states when you go on a vacation, you can find expensive and the not so expensive. I stay with Greeks though every year and have a hard time getting them to let me spend my money on anything so I end up buying them cakes or sweets for the house, take gifts with me etc ...but like one said....use the local tavernas instead of the big restaurants and you'll find the food very good and find the Greek life fun and friendly.

In a good restaurant you should pay about 20-25 euro per person, for a complete meal. You can pay less (15) in a tavern and you can pay more (30-40) in a luxury restaurant.
For shopping it depends on the area. Kolonaki is the nicest shopping area in Athens, but expensive. It is worth having a walk there though. Also go to Ermou street near Syntagma square, it has plenty of shops with different prices. I don't know what sort of things you'd like to buy, so I can't tell how much it will cost.

Kifissia is the main costly suburb of Athens. i might anticipate the rents to be around one thousand-1500 euro for a astounding 2 mattress room flat( 0.5 of that for a smaller flat with one mattress room and one front room). the comparable applies for Kolonaki, the main costly neighbourhood in the centre of Athens. yet in different factors you will discover extra low priced rents, I propose in Kallithea, which isn't a foul suburb and it incredibly is incredibly linked with the prepare, you could hire a good-sized flat for 3 hundred-500 euro. comparable as Ampelokipi, as yet another answerer informed you. enable two hundred euro optimal in line with month for expenses, electrical energy, water, heating, etc.

Bring a lot amount.... (just kidding)

Athens is quite (?) expensive compare to other European cities.
But...
if you go to tourist areas and have dinner there you are gonna pay a lot, thats for sure.
the same to hotels in the center of athens.
Be smart. find places that Greeks go, they now better.
Don't ask the people from the hotels cause some of them get paid from the taverns to send you there.
For greek food (specially in sea food) go to Kesariani city at the main square.
for meat lovers go to Vlahika area (at Vari city).
for "souvlaki" and "giros" any kind of these "on the go" shops will do (but in Monastiraki is expensive as is a tourists area)
...
you will find a lot....

There are places for all of kind of prices...
don't worry about it.
