I would suggest a trip to your doctor. You may have a broken hinge.

Because of my advanced osteoporosis, my jaw hinges broke long ago. Now they come unhinged easily while I am chewing sometimes. I just end up grabbing the jaw with my thumb under my chin and my two first fingers inside my mouth under my tongue. Then pulling the lower jaw out away from the face and down until the hinge snaps back into place. This can be very painful if you get the nerve caught in the hinge.

You could have suffered a fractured jaw based on your symptoms, and the only way that you can determine if additional medical treatment is necessary is to have an x-ray done.

The jaw is a very complicated mechanism, and modern medical science still was not found a way to repair damage to the jaw itself, at least not where it connects to the skull.

The only thing you can do is call your doctor to have it checked out, there is no easy way to fix to this, and I can give you no reassurance that if you leave it for a week or two that will go away. No doctor would take that kind of risk.

If it was dislocated, youd know it. As far as your bite being off, this is most times caused by the temporal mandibular joint (TMJ). YES, you should be seen and if the oral surgeon decides that the TMJ is the culprit (via a series of xrays of the jaws while the mouth is opened at different degrees), theres not much that can be done (except to avoid eating things that you must open wide to eat, i.e., hoagie). Bottom line....go to your dental office to obtain medical care. As far as the swelling, thats normal as is with any injury that causes trauma to the tissues....ice only helps the first 24 hrs. But you really need to have it looked at. Untreated TMJ can cause excrutiating headaches, neck and ear aches, and the "clicking" every time you open your mouth will drive you nuts! Not to mention the damage thats gonna occur to your teeth since they no longer occlude (come together properly).

Take Ibuprofen for the swelling and ice it. The swelling is probably causing it not to close correctly.

When my jaw hinge was swollen from Rheumatoid inflammation, I couldn't close my jaw either. It is fine now.
Work on getting the swelling and inflammation gone then if it won't close you may need to have it X-rayed.

Go and get it checked out. It's not like that forever, don't worry. In the mean time, try not to get punched.

If you can move your jaw it is not broken but because you have numbness on one side you need to go to urgent care and get it checked out.

take a kitchen towel, roll up, place it in your mouth, make sure your tongue is underneath and not between your teeth (who will come in place in a second) and someone should hit you firm and short on the other jawbone. Make it quick, it will hurt and will turn blue. But they'll do the same in the hospital. Good luck

the swelling will go down but it sounds like you need to go to the ER for an xray to see if it's dislocated or broken
