Occupationally speaking, a "profession" is any task, trade, service, skill or duty that one performs to earn money. In many instances, an amateur, volunteer, or hobbyist may have even greater skills or more indepth knowledge in a particular field than a "professional", but they are not considered professionals because they do not use their skills to earn income or other personal compensation.

The personal characteristics of true professionals are to become experts in their field, maintain the highest quality of work associated with being a professional, and to continue their education in keeping their occupational knowledge and skills up to date with the latest improvements and innovations. However, since professionals own or work for a business, learning about the business itself while providing excellent customer service, friendly and knowledgeable customer relations, efficient time management, effective business practices, high-level quality control, and a solid guarantee of customer satisfaction are other professional characteristics that are as necessary as knowledge of the profession.

Actually, profession is derived from Latin word 'professio', means 'calling', e.g. when you become a monk. But nowadays, its meaning is reduced to be 'a job' or 'an occupation'. Some people say you are professional only when you go through specific education, e.g. college or university lectures, and work according your major.

For me, any kind of job can be a profession as long as you are 'called' for it, you love it, you do it wholeheartedly, and you master it.

Being professional means staying focused on the job, and not taking things personally. Customers, feedback from the employer, other employees. The trick is to check your emotions at the door, and while at work, "be at work" and do the job.
