like mostly when people torture and kill animals they get only harsh punishment like community service.

There are examples of people who go to jail for animal cruelty in many states. I personally think that anybody who tortures an animal should receive a stiffer penalty than what is currently taking place.
I don't think community service is enough. Helk, people can buy their community service hours anymore at the price of $7.00 per hour in most areas anymore.
I think sometimes that the person should receive the same punishment that they bestowed on the animals that trusted them!

reading the answers already here, there is a distincion that I feel must be made. One person pointed out that farmers torture animals. "torture" of animals by a farmer, a medical researcher, etc, if goal oriented. Despite the negaitve utility of the pain to the animal there is at least the goal of positive utility to offset it for mankind.
A person who tortures an animal with no untility in return, other than perhaps their own perverse pleasure in it's pain is so low that they have no place in human society. Not just becuase of what they have dont to the animal, but becuase they have demonstrated such low character that they don't deserve the company of their fellow man.
I'm a big fan of do unto them as they did unto the animal in quesiton.

There should be harsh penalities for this abuse. These are not the type of folks I like to live among. Torture of animals indicates psychopathic behavior and are not the type of people you want around your loved ones.

I think they should go to jail. Animals have feelings too and can not defend themselves or get away. It is almost like abusing a baby. They can not fight back or protect themselves. I look at my animals like my children I have four dogs and if someone ever did anything to hurt them I would want them to go to jail. I know a lot of people feel the same way, their pet is a part of their family.

People who torture animals should not go to jail. During our lifetime, many animals were torture and, i think humans should just get the animal taken away, or live somewhere else away from animals. Farmers torture animals so why should we be blame?

I would love to see that become a capital offense! People who torture animals are mean, evil people who would do the same thing to other people if they had the chance. Get rid of em.

I think so, yes. They need some sort of harsher punishment than what they currently get. Animals are just as important as another human being. And what's even more sad is that animals have no way of even knowing what's going on. They have no way of fighting back and don't know how to stop it. It's awful and makes me sad :(

yes jail definitely it takes a coward to hurt an innocent animal wonder if they could square off with someone that could torture them
