Yes, but it is high drama and addicting to the droves of people that watch it every day wondering "what will happen next!" but only if there is a really good, intriguing story, charactors and dialouge.
When I was in college I remember even the GUY in coming up to watch "General Hospital", sometimes skipping classes over the "Luke and Laura" saga, until it got too "out there" with the "Ice Princess" stuff.
People like HUMAN drama as they can relate to it, unless the show is supernaturally based, like the X-Files, the ploy usually doesn't work, but has not stopped the producers in Hollywood to date to try it to hook more men into watching their show.

I do agree that the supernatural stuff is a bit wacky. But a soap lets you watch a continuous story without having repeats. Some stories are believable for real life situations. I was watching one not too long ago where the father didn't approve of what his daughter was doing so he stopped paying for her college tuition and took her car away. That's exactly what my husband and I did. A lot of celebrities started off doing soaps like Meg Ryan and Kevin Bacon. Once you catch on to the storylines it's like watching a regular show at night, but you get to see it everyday.

Try the Young and the Restless. It's been on for years and the storyline seems more realistic than, let's say the Bold and the Beautiful. Most fans I talk to cannot identify with B&B because of the sister, mother, father, brother sleeping with each other type stuff. The incest type storylines seem unrealistic. Y&R on the otherhand seems to develop its storylines better without boring you - except years ago when the storyline focused on Catherine Chancellor losing her memory and becoming a "bag lady" Wow that was boooring!

They become your family, your community and an extension of your life. People with no real life of their own, find them comforting and in a strange way fulfilling. When you consider the hazards of living a real life, watching soaps is a safe alternative. They also can be very educational regarding pertinent issues and you can learn and grow while being entertained by your soap family. I personally have lost touch with them in the last few years. Maybe they need to become more now than YESTERDAY.

It gives you something to do. Plus sometimes they can relate to a person life and what they have been through. Other times people like things that are out of the ordinary. Something that doe not happen in every day life. That what make soaps to the rest of us interesting.

Don't try to understand it. Just like women shouldn't try to understand why men like wrestling.
