No! I've always been so terrified of it happening, I've hung on with a vice-like grip. I wouldn't want to have to dive on in there after it!

Not personally, but the rectal grip is very strong, particularly in an animal of that size, otherwise the horse'd end up incontinent - hang on to it!
If you're concerned about broken glass, check with a vet - chances are it'll just follow everything else out next time the horse 'goes'!

I've always been too chicken to do it; especially since seeing the results the vet got with a rectal thermometer + a dog with an upset stomach!
Thats what ears are for. If they don't feel right, the vet can do it!

You should tie a string to the end of the thermometer, just in case.

Our vet had a string with a clip to clip to the tail hair which we promptly imitated. We DID loose one when it got pooped out and the clip pulled the hair out - one busted thermometer when it hit the ground.

actually yes, it does happen, thats why they recommend that you tie a string to it so if it happens to get "lost" you can still get it.
