Work on behalf of the dead is practiced by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. It means to stand as a proxy to receive ordinances on behalf of a deceased person. These ordinances/blessings then become a spiritual "bank account" in which the deceased may draw of he/she wishes while they are in the spirit world. The ordinances include baptism, marriage to last through the eternities and being sealed as an eternal family. (for more info visit www.mormom.org, the Church's official site for information on its basic beliefs.)

Besides the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, other religions have practices which they believe have an effect on the state/status of the dead.

Catholicisim: Masses for the Dead are supposed to bring blessings (such as relief from time in Purgatory) for the souls waiting to enter heaven. Memorial Masses have similar influence.

Buddhism: Special craftsman design paper replicas of earthly riches which families purchase. They then have priests burn them to send the objects into the spirit world for use by their deceased family members. For example, people often send money, cars, and other emblems of wealth to improve the After-life experience of a loved one.

These are just a couple of example.
